Teppei KANEUJI : Romantic Barricade

ESLITE GALLERY is pleased to present “Teppei Kaneuji: Romantic Barricade” from September 8th to October 7th, 2018, featuring approximately 40 works to show the artist’s development over the past seven years since his last exhibition with the gallery in 2011. In addition to making several works specifically for this occasion, Kaneuji will engage with Taiwanese audiences in a special activity on the opening day by making screen print on the audiences’ personal textile objects.

Teppei Kaneuji’s work stems from scholarly contemplation of what sculptures can be, yet outwardly it assumes an appearance that is contemporarily fantastical and fun. “White Discharge,” for instance, uses the ubiquitous plastic readymade objects such as animation figurine, wash basin, clothes hanger and even toilet plunger from our neighborhood children’s toy stores, IKA and hardware stores. He begins by taking them apart, reassemble, then pouring white resin over them to create an otherworldly conglomerate. By stripping these objects from their original functions, roles and definitions, Kaneuji thereby proposes new connections and orders to stretch our imagination. Other series to be shown include “Mello Gold,” “How to Disappear Incompletely,” “Hard Boiled Day Dreams,” “Games, Dance and Constructions” and more. If destruction can bring about new beginnings, Kaneuji takes the concept of collage to a whole different level to discuss the relationship between man and object, material and space, life and natural phenomenon, while transporting us from our immediate reality to an inventive world where unlimited new possibilities abound.

Born in Kyoto in 1978, Teppei KANEUJI received his master’s degree in sculpture from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2003, and currently works for his alma mater. He was the youngest artist to have a solo exhibition at Yokohama Museum of Art, and has been exhibited internationally at Witte de With in Rotterdam, Netherland, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Trino, Italy, and Ullens Contemporary Art Center, Beijing, China.
